Anomie

The familiar tightening

in his gut told him

to lighten up.

For one crazy moment,

he thought of jumping

out of the car.

Then dread washed

over him,

hard and cold.

His stomach lurched.

He took a slow,

deep breath.

The rain was

plummeting

like cold pebbles.

The air around him

was a cloud

of alcohol.
