Remembrance
I open my eyes and we are on the beach.
The day is long gone and the rocky landscape
Is bathed in pale silver moonlight.
In front of us is an ancient pier,
Rotten and unstable and bleached white
From the intense focus of the sun.
Under the pier there is a large stone
Rubbed smooth as if by churning water.
We cover it with a large quilt
And sit and rest while sipping tea.
Our bodies close together, shoulders touching,
Our fingers grasping the delicate cups.
And suddenly I know that this is a dream
And I know that the intrusive ring of my alarm clock
Will soon steal it all away from me.
But for now I simply relax and take it all in,
Enjoying the breeze, the roar of the sea,
And the company of some friends long absent from my life.
